Caviste, wine bar, and fine grocery all in one, Pousse Pas Mémé dans la Vigne is one of Montpellier's most charming and unusual hideaways — a place to drink, nibble, and share. Once a bank, the space has been transformed into a warm, welcoming spot in the heart of the city, just steps from the iconic Place de la Comédie, where the spirit of "Mémé" (grandma) reigns throughout. Its sunny, spacious terraces and beautiful listed vaulted cellars make it as comfortable as it is full of character.
The heart of the house is the cave à vins, with around 400 wines spanning a wide range of price points — carefully chosen to please every palate, and there to surprise you. Everything can be enjoyed on the spot or taken home, exactly as you like. Down in the former safe-deposit room you'll find a selection of spirits — intense whiskies, artisan gins, infused rums — while upstairs the fine grocery overflows with local products and beyond: terrines, artisan jams, regional olive oil, and a lineup of craft beers from the area, with close to a hundred references between blondes, ambers, browns, and IPAs to discover by the glass or to take away.
What makes Mémé so unique is the concept. Everything in the cave — fine groceries, wines, craft beers, sharing boards — can be savoured in or taken out. Prices are caviste prices, kept fair for every budget thanks to Mémé working directly with winemakers, brewers, and producers wherever possible, so the saving lands straight on your bill. And there's a single, friendly corkage fee on any of the 400-plus bottles you'd like to open and enjoy on site — a treat without breaking the bank. Every bottle on the shelves, naturally, is personally approved by Mémé.
To go with your glass, Mémé pulls out all the stops, served from 9:30am to 1am (because there's no set hour for apéro here). Graze on tapas like Corsican coppa, Ossau-Iraty with black cherry jam, or marinated peeled gambas, or settle in with one of the apéro boards — La Planche de Mémé Lucette for 1–2 (one cheese, two charcuteries, a spread), Paulette for 2–3, or the generous Georgette for 3–4. At midday there are homemade salads and bruschettas, and for something sweet, chocolate mousse, a chocolate-chip muffin, or a cherry clafoutis. To drink, there's a weekly rotating selection of wines by the glass (two of each colour to discover), spirits by the glass, original cocktails crafted from the cave's own treasures, and a thoughtful alcohol-free range of artisan colas, lemonades, iced teas, infusions, and juices of every kind.
Equal parts wine cellar, neighbourhood bar, and gourmet pantry, Pousse Pas Mémé dans la Vigne is a genuinely original, easygoing spot to settle in with a great glass and good things to share, right in the centre of Montpellier.
